Selim Pepper Spiced Cocktail


  • 2 oz (60 ml) vodka or gin
  • 1/2 oz (15 ml) fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 oz (15 ml) simple syrup (or adjust to taste)
  • 1 pinch of ground Selim pepper (Xylopia aethiopica)
  • Ice cubes
  • Lime wheel or twist, for garnish
  • Selim pepper pod, for garnish (optional)


1. Moisten the rim of a cocktail glass with a lime wedge, then dip the rim into ground Selim pepper to coat it with a spicy rim.

2. In a cocktail shaker, combine vodka or gin, fresh lime juice, simple syrup, Angostura bitters, and a pinch of ground Selim pepper. Add ice cubes to the shaker.

3. Secure the lid on the cocktail shaker and shake the mixture vigorously for about 15-20 seconds to chill the ingredients.

4. Strain the cocktail into the prepared glass filled with ice.

5. Garnish with a lime wheel or twist for a citrusy aroma. For an extra decorative touch, you can add a whole Selim pepper pod as a garnish (make sure your guests know it's for garnish and not to consume).
